When they come for a visit to Victoria Falls, most of the tourists have to decide on which side they choose to admire the view and the enchanting waterfall. It is natural to be this way, because Victoria Falls spans two countries, both exotic and beautiful: Zimbabwe and Zambia.
The town of Victoria Falls is only 2 km away from the park, so you can have a pleasant walk to it. From Zimbabwe the views are amazing, starting from Cataract Point on the west side until Danger’s Point on the eastern part of the plateau; here you will see the fall dropping abruptly and separating the two countries.
Even if it gets lost in its mist, you still have the chance to get a glimpse of the Main Falls, which is close to Devil’s Cataract. When you reach Danger Point it is easy to admire and have a frontal view of the Rainbow Falls and parts of Eastern Cataract on the Zambian side. Different viewpoints are connected between each other by the “Chain Walk”. This place offers excellent frontal views over the Devil’s Cataract or Cataract Island and to all the major falls around them: Rainbow Falls, Livingstone Island, Horseshoe Falls and the Main Falls.
For many years in Zimbabwe the political life has been rough, changing the economical and social life as well. Zimbabwe it was once a blooming touristic and agricultural country, but in time has degenerated in a difficult to live in country. The hyperinflation, the food shortage and corruption made many people to find shelter and a new life in the neighboring countries (South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Mozambique). Recently, the situation has been stabilized in the country and the economy has started to give signs of recovery.
Visiting Victoria Falls from Zambia’s side it offers you not only the same picturesque views, but a variety of outdoor activities. You can always take a walk to the Boiling Pot whirlpool. If you like heights and seeing the world from above then you will enjoy the helicopter excursions. Nothing is more romantic than to see the sunset while you are on a boat with your loved one. The sunset cruises will give you the chance to experience that.
A little bit of adrenaline is what you might look for at Victoria Falls and you will not get disappointed, because there is a bungee jumping base positioned on the Livingstone Bridge.
Coming from Livingstone to Victoria Falls is not an easy thing to do, because you have to take a cab. The town is beautiful and it offers to its tourist a true African atmosphere, but it is located 11 km away from Victoria Falls.
Some cheap accommodations in the area are available, like Chanter’s Lodge or hostels like Fawlty Towers. In the town you can find many shops, restaurants with excellent food and even medical clinics.
For longer distances is recommended to use the blue cabs. Keep in mind that some paid excursions offer transportation to and from your hotel to the chosen destination.
Hotels closer to Victoria Falls are Royal Livingstone and the Zambezi Sun. From there you can walk to see the falls. The only inconvenient is that they are far away from the town of Livingstone.
In the park, on the Zambia’s side, you can admire the profile views of the Eastern Cataract (with amazing rainbows in the early hours of the day) and the frontal views of the cataract right across the Knife Bridge. You can also see the profile views of parts of the falls on the Zimbabwe side.
Activities and entertainment
If adventure is your thing, then Victoria Falls will satisfy completely your appetite. This is a place that will share with its tourists its culture and history of the land.
A racing heart experience is definitely the bungee jumping base at the Victoria Falls Bridge. It is considered one of the most spectacular and probably one of the highest in the world. Once you take the plunge, you will have the only the sky above you and the Zambezi River underneath you.
Another great adventure is the Gorge Swing (Zip Line). Being suspended in the air, right across the Batoka Gorge is something that you should try at least once in your life. The sense of freedom cannot be compared with anything else. You can choose to go by yourself or ask a friend to join you for the tandem option.
If you want to get even closer to nature, now you have the chance with a walk with lions. No collars or leashes involved. These animals are taking care of and walked daily before they are ready to be released into the wild.
On the Zambezi River you have the option to experience something called White Water Rafting. Trust your guides and allow yourself to fully enjoy this adventure that takes you over 23 raging rapids. There is the choice of surfing the water on a special river board or you can go kayaking with a friend or on your own.
The Helicopter Flights are a great way to admire Victoria Falls and the surroundings from above. You will feel like in a documentary from National Geographic. It’s not an activity that you want to miss.
The long walks through the African bushes are another way of spending your day here.
Do not underestimate the beauty of an exhilarating ride over the Falls in a microlight. Microlight Flights are available for those willing to feel the wind brushing their faces while leading them gently over the forest.
Explore the cliffs by taking one of the numerous biking tracks. Quad and Mountain Biking is an activity both healthy and rewarding.
One of the high-powered jet-boats will turn your day in a thrilling experience.
For photographs looking for special locations to catch on camera, there is Devil’s Pool. It is a natural Pool and walking around it offers great views.
Other ways of enjoying a day outdoor are: horse backing, fly fishing or exotic elephant back safaris. You can also get in touch with local people and experience African daily life on first hand by visiting Mukuni Village.
Do not miss the chance to admire in silence the lunar rainbow over Victoria Falls during full moon.
